That's why I am going around the many burmese sites. I may not understand much but at least I get to recognise a few common words and phrases. It's called immersion (both functionally and culturally)... to get oneself at ease with the ambience.
I teach in primary schools now. My pupils came from various cultural backgrounds... including Burmese. I had one Shan pupil 2 years ago... she can only speak a Thai-sounding dialect (and a smattering of Mandarin words)... but today she can speak, read and write Chinese and English satisfactorily.
Like I always told my pupils, "If you have the passion and the will to do it, you can... it is only a matter of time." Yes, I know that someday I will be able to read and write fluent ျမန္မာစာ here (after which I will also try learning to play ေစာင္း or burmese harp).
